If you live in a home with limited storage space, it can be frustrating trying to store your clothes safely and efficiently. If you’re overwhelmed by the amount of clothes you own, consider renting a storage unit. These storage tips will help protect your clothes from damage.

1. Wash your wardrobe.
Wash each piece of clothing thoroughly, and be proactive about treating stains with a spot remover. When drying clothes, avoid scented dryer sheets, as this will attract pests to your unit. Also, make sure your clothes are completely dry because moisture allows mold and mildew to grow.

2. Organize your clothes.
Sort everything based on type of clothing. Put dresses in one pile, skirts in another, and so on. Keep lighter fabrics on top and heavier fabrics on the bottom. Fold everything neatly.

3. Pack everything up.
Pack your piles into plastic storage bins. This will allow your clothes to breathe. Garment bags are the best option because they’re designed for breathability, but they’re also very expensive. Avoid using plastic bags or vacuum sealed bags. It’s best to loosely fold items for storage.

Some other tips:

  • Delicate fabrics, such as silk, should be stored in cotton bags for breathability before being placed in plastic bins. You can also wrap them in acid-free tissue paper.

  • Use silica gel packets to prevent moisture buildup. You can buy large quantities of these online.

  • Label your storage bins to make items easier to find.

  • Place storage bins on wooden pallets that provide air circulation, in order to prevent moisture buildup.

  • If you can, purchase a rolling clothing rack that can hang garment bags. This will ensure your expensive, high-quality items remain wrinkle-free while they’re in storage. Make sure, however, that you use the correct hangers that won’t stretch out and deform certain fabrics.
