Home appliances take up a large amount of space, especially when you no longer need them. If you’ve recently upgraded your kitchen appliances but don’t want to throw out your old ones, you can either store them in your home or place them in a storage unit. If you’re in the process of transitioning your old appliances into a storage unit, here are four tips to help you prepare.

1. Run a wash cycle.
If you’re putting an old dishwasher or washing machine into storage, it’s wise to run a wash cycle to make sure the appliance is sparkling clean. If you leave grime inside an appliance, you might find it difficult to use or in need of repair once you go to take it out of storage.

2. Keep the doors open.
When you store appliances, you should always keep the doors open. If you close the doors, especially if you’ve recently run a wash cycle, you’re welcoming mold and mildew. You definitely don’t want to deal with that when it’s time to retrieve your appliance from storage.

3. Put baking soda inside.
If you want to prevent odors from developing in your appliance, put a box of baking soda inside! It’s a well known deodorant, and it will make sure your appliance remains clean and smelling good during its time in storage.

4. Cover your appliances.
You should always cover your appliances with a tarp or an old sheet. This will protect them from dust, debris, and dings/scratches. Don’t ever use plastic, so that’s not a breathable material.
