Considering storing your bicycle in your storage unit? You’ve come to the right place! If you want to keep your bicycle in good shape for several years to come, it’s important to store it properly. If you don’t, you may find some unexpected issues next time you take it for a ride.
1. Inspect the chains and brakes.
If you aren’t careful, your bike chain can develop a buildup of grime, dust, and dirt. Clean your chain with a lint-free cloth. Backpedal the bike while it’s upside down to reach all the chain links. You can also use baby wipes. Once you’re satisfied, apply a lubricant to make sure you’re storing your bike in prime condition. Lastly, check to make sure your brakes aren’t stuck.
2. Clean the frame.
Wipe it down with a damp cloth. Use soap, if necessary. You can also clean the seat and handlebars.
3. Don’t forget about your tires.
In order to keep the tires off the floor, consider investing in a hanging rack. This will preserve the rubber better. Just remember to hang your bike by its frame and not the wheel spokes. If you don’t have the option to hang your bike, flip it upside down and store it with wheels in the air. You’ll probably have to inflate the tires after long-term storage, but pump them up anyways before you put the bike away.
4. Consider a bike cover.
A bike cover can really come in handy if your bike is accidentally exposed to moisture or UV-rays. This means that during transportation, or if you go camping or bring your bike on a trip, damage is far less likely to happen.
