Nature is both incredibly beautiful and incredibly scary. Natural disasters are no joke. We’ve all seen the devastating aftermath of severe storms on the news. So, how do you protect your belongings and keep them safe in the event of a hurricane, tornado, fire, mudslide, or other natural disaster? Here are some things you can do to give you peace of mind.

Make Some Tough Decisions
If you know you live in a coastal area prone to hurricanes, or maybe you live on the West Coast and experience annual fires, you might have to make some hard decisions. Many people rent storage units for this very reason. If a natural disaster is imminent, you’ll have to decide what to store and what to leave at the house. Most people choose to store both valuable and sentimental items, and leave the rest behind. (If it’s replaceable, there’s no need to store it.)

Keep a Backup Generator In Your Storage Unit
Backup generators are extremely handy, and it’s smart to have one one hand. If you don’t have room to store one at your house, keep it in your storage unit.

Keep Your Belongings Off The Ground
In order to have complete peace of mind, make sure everything in your storage unit is off the ground. Use crates and vertical shelving units to minimize the chances of water damage to furniture, books, pictures, clothing, and electronics.
