Many articles on the web tell you how to pack correctly, but sometimes it’s more helpful to know which mistakes to avoid. Here are five moving and packing mistakes that you should keep in mind as you prepare for your move.

1. Using the wrong packing materials.
You might think any boxes will suffice, but that’s not true. Strong, sturdy boxes are essential to keep your belongings safe. In addition to quality boxes, make sure you have strong tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, furniture covers, and bold markers.

2. Not properly filling, sealing, or stacking boxes.
You can never have too much padding to prevent damage to your items! Wrap each item in bubble wrap or packing paper. Create a base layer in each box of packing peanuts, and put the heaviest items on the bottom. If you have any empty space in your boxes, add packing materials to create a cushion. And lastly, don’t overfill your boxes! It’s better for them to be underpacked than overpacked. Super heavy boxes are more prone to dropping and shattering objects inside.

3. Not labeling boxes.
Use a bold permanent marker to label each box on all sides. Write down the contents and the room in which it should be unpacked in your new space. If your boxes have fragile items inside, label them as such.

4. Not setting aside the essentials.
Keep a box of essentials on-hand so you’re not scrambling to find certain items during the moving process. Some things you can include in this box are toiletries, cleaning supplies, dishware and utensils, electronics chargers, snacks, pet food, pillows and blankets, medication, contact lenses, checkbook, and important documents.

5. Procrastinating.

Save yourself the stress of procrastinating and do everything in advance, with plenty of time to spare. Change your address with USPS, transfer utilities, and schedule moving assistance early on. This will save you a lot of anxiety as your moving date approaches.
