Between moving boxes and packing paper, moving typically entails a lot of waste. However, it’s possible to complete an eco-friendly move. Below are four tips to do just that.

1. Recycle.
As you prepare to move, you might realize you have a lot more stuff than will fit in your new place. Before you start packing, make a list of things you want to donate. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure, after all! If you have large items that you’re not sure what to do with, such as furniture, consider renting a storage unit to use as temporary storage.

2. Green Moving Boxes
Moving boxes require a lot of paper to make, as well as a lot of energy output, which means they’re not very eco-friendly. Make sure you closely evaluate everything you need to pack so that you only buy the exact number of boxes you’ll actually need. Also consider searching for secondhand boxes that still have structural integrity. Grocery stores and liquor stores are great places to look. You can even buy plastic, reusable boxes and use them for storage later.

3. Eco-Friendly Packing Material
Instead of buying packing materials, you can pack with things you already have, such as egg cartons, blankets, towels, or newspaper. You could also invest in some recyclable packing paper.

4. Green Transportation
Many moving companies now make an effort to operate vehicles that run on cleaner fuel. Moving often means driving back and forth several times, if you’re doing it on your own...so hiring a larger trick is a great way to cut down on carb emissions.
