Experiencing a robbery is a devastating event. However, having valuables stolen from your storage unit can totally alter and damage your peace of mind. In the same way that you should protect your home from theft, you should also be proactive about theft prevention in your storage unit. Here are four ways to keep your valuables safe in your storage unit.
1. Invest in a video camera.
Video cameras are a great way to deter burglars and other criminals. Consider hooking one up outside of your storage unit or installing one on the inside. It doesn’t have to be a functional video camera to scare off burglars, but if it is, you can also use video surveillance to identify the burglar if anything is stolen.
2. Choose proper lighting.
High quality lighting is important when you rent a storage unit. Bright lights prevent burglars from snooping around because they prefer to hide in the dark. If you want to invest in additional lighting, install battery-operated motion sensor lights inside and outside of your storage unit.
3. Buy a strong lock.
Circular locks are very popular, but you should take plenty of time to find a great lock that can withstand bolt cutters. Don’t buy a lock with a long shackle. Cylinder/disc locks are harder to cut.
