Whether you’re moving for work, school, or personal reasons, a temporary move abroad can be tough to figure out. It’s okay to take small things with you, like clothes and toiletries, but what about larger items? Where do you store them while you’re gone, especially if you’re cancelling a lease or moving out of your home?

If you’re only moving temporarily, it doesn’t make sense to take big items with you. But it also doesn’t make sense to sell your belongings, since you won’t be gone for very long. This is why a storage unit is your best bet! Storage units can hold everything from personal belongings like bicycles and clothing, to larger items like furniture and cars.

Here are a few tips to efficiently utilize your storage unit while you’re abroad.

  1. Organize your things well. Label boxes, pack your unit neatly, and keep a list of everything you’ve stored.

  2. Pack strategically. Pack larger items in the back of the storage unit and smaller items near the front. This ensures smaller items are easy to retrieve if you need to grab something before you leave.

  3. Declutter: While you’re packing for both your move and your storage unit, declutter your belongings. Consider donating items you no longer need.
