There are quite a few reasons you might need to store gasoline. You might own a gas powered lawn mower, or you might have extra in storage in case your vehicle or motorcycle runs out. It’s great to have gasoline in storage, as a matter of convenience. However, there are some safety precautions you need to keep in mind.
1. Store your gas in a safe place.
Store gas away from your home. If you have a shed, that’s the best option. Before placing gas in a storage unit, check with your storage facility to make sure it’s allowed. Since it’s a hazardous material, it might be a no-go.
2. Only handle the gas outside.
Gas fumes can quickly make you dizzy or nauseous if you’re in a confined space. If you need to open your gas container, make sure you step outside first.
3. Store the gas at room temperature.
Gas, like any other flammable liquid, should be stored at room temperature and at least 50 feet away from any ignition sources.
4. Keep the gas in an approved container.
Gas is required, by law, to be stored in approved containers. Before you place it in a storage unit, make sure it’s in the right container. This is to ensure the gasoline doesn’t eat through a material that isn’t proper storage.
