Storage units are extremely helpful innovations for those who need a separate place to store various items, big or small. Units vary in size, but over time, units of any size can accumulate too much, leaving you without enough space for more items. If the unit is not organized or cleaned out once in a while, you may even have difficulty finding things which could cause a great deal of frustration. Consider spring cleaning your storage unit to maximize the space and to make your life easier.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Start by sorting, organizing, and then labeling your boxes or items. As you go through your piles, consider sorting your items into the following four categories:

  • Keep

  • Donate

  • Garbage

  • Sell

After taking everything out and sorting the unit, give the unit itself a good cleaning. Dust any shelves and sweep the floor to keep dirt and build-up at bay and this will also help in getting rid of any odors.

Once your kept items are sorted and labeled, create a strategy on how and where you want these items stored in the unit. Large objects such as furniture should be placed towards the back and smaller items and boxes should be towards the front. Be sure to put anything you may need towards the front as well.

It’s always a good idea to organize your storage space every once in a while to make room for more items and to make it so you can find your things with ease. Once the new layout is established, try to maintain it as best as possible for a better and more satisfying storage experience.
