With summer rapidly approaching, you may have thought about organizing your garage or storing items there to help clear some space. To keep your home safe, free of pests, and your belongings in good condition, the following should never be stored in the garage:
Storing pet food in the garage is just an invitation for pests to come into your home. If you have to store pet food in the garage, make sure to store it in a tightly sealed metal or plastic container. Rodents and other pests can eat through paper and cardboard!
For safety reasons, oily rags should never be stored in your garage. A fire or spontaneous combustion can occur when rags covered in oil are stored in a place where internal heat generated is trapped and cannot escape.
If you want to keep your books in good condition, never store them in dark, damp environments such as the garage since insects love to eat through starchy substances.
Although firewood is most commonly stored in the garage, it is not the best place. Like pet food and books, it attracts pests which then could enter your home. It is recommended that firewood be stored at least 20 feet away from your home.
Though surprising perhaps, sleeping bags should also not be stored in the garage. The fluctuating temperatures and humidity are not ideal conditions for fabric. Fabric can get moldy and rodents love to chew through it. Keep your fabric items stored inside your home!
Paint should not be stored in areas with exposure to extreme heat or extreme cold as it can alter the formula. Be sure to check the paint can for the recommended storage temperatures.
A propane tank is known to be generally safe, but if it happens to leak in an enclosed space, any small spark, or even starting your car, can cause a fire.It is recommended to keep propane tanks outside where they aren’t exposed to extremely high temperatures.
