Storage units can easily become a breeding ground for hoarding, if not cleaned out and organized frequently. Sure, it’s no one’s favorite task- but the more frequently you clean out your storage unit, the less hectic it gets. We recommend cleaning out your unit once a year, and we know that sounds like a lot but here are some tips to make cleaning and organizing your storage unit less painstaking.

Get help
Cleaning out a storage facility is a challenging task, so enlisting the assistance of others may be beneficial. Asking for help might also help you relax and make the work more enjoyable. Unpacking, labeling, packing, rearranging, and organizing are all things that friends or family may assist you with to help you clean out your storage unit in less time. Playing some groovy music while cleaning out your unit can also help you uplift your mood while performing this dreary task.

Take inventory
Taking stock of what’s in the storage unit will help when you’re looking for things in the future. It also lets you take stock of what you actually need and what you don’t need or use anymore and can donate or sell. Keeping inventory will also help you control your consumption in the future, because very often we have stuff stored away but don’t remember and go out and buy the same things again. This way you can keep a running list of what’s in the unit and check it before making purchases.

Arrange pick ups
Once you decide what you want to sell/ donate, it would be effective to schedule a pick-up day. You can list your items for sale, or schedule ngo pickups all together on a particular day so you don’t have to lug things around. Facebook marketplace and local not for profits are good options to look into while selling/donating your things.

Set a schedule
A lot of time and effort goes into cleaning a storage unit. It can take a few hours to a week to get done, depending on how many items are in the unit and how many rows and corners you need to get rid of. Having a schedule for the removal of large items from your storage unit can help you get organized and have more working space later. It will also help minimize the stress on you. However, it's also important to make sure that you stick to it. Make sure to schedule meals and coffee breaks!

Stay calm and collected
Cleaning out your storage unit is a hectic task, but there’s no way around it. The longer you put it off the worse it's going to be. Our advice is to stay calm and collected while cleaning out your unit, take a breather if it gets stressful and keep some fun music and snacks handy for when it gets monotonous. The calmer you stay, the quicker the time will pass by.
