Maybe you need to clear some space in your house and are loathe to sell your gym equipment.
Maybe you’re avoiding the gym because of COVID or rising fees.
Want to go to the gym without actually going to the gym?
Here are a few tips for turning your storage unit into your personal workout room.

Plan the Space

The sort of equipment your able to set up and use depends on the size of your unit. Make sure you get a unit that suits what you have or are planning to get. Do you need a unit with electricity that you can use to power a treadmill? Are you just hoping for a quiet space to lay down your yoga mat? This will all play into the type of unit you eventually get.

Measure your equipment and get a unit large enough to comfortably and safely use it.
Decide whether you are going to get mats to lay your equipment on. While it sounds easier to clean up a concrete or metal floor, hard surfaces like these are terrible for your joints. Better to get the mats.

Stock Up

Getting all the way to your unit and then realizing you forgot your water bottle is a pretty bad feeling. Try stashing a case of water in your unit, along with a couple small towels, protein bars, and a first aid kit (just in case).
Of course, any food you keep in your unit should be stored in airtight containers to keep it safe from critters and the elements.
Be sure to get some antibacterial wipes to keep on hand and wipe down your equipment when you’re finished. Exercise equipment is already a magnet for bacteria. Combined with a humid storage unit, your sweaty exercise bike will turn into a safe haven for mildew and mold before you know it.

Air Flow and Lighting

Of course, you don’t want to be doing all of this in a dark stuffy box. Not only is it dangerous, but it’s also depressing. Bring some battery powered lamps or string lighting to light up the space so you can see what you’re doing. A fan to move the air around will be a lifesaver 30 minutes into your workout.
Also, try decorating your unit a little. A few posters here and a fake plant there can really help keep you in a good mood while you exercise. Put that together with some music and you have a pretty nice experience going.

Voila! A perfect space to house your own personal gym without having to watch the weird guy taking selfies in the mirror.
