With just a couple months until the college semester ends and summer arrives, you might be wondering which items you should leave at your college apartment and which items you should take home. You’ve likely accumulated a few extra belongings over the past year. So, which ones should you leave and which ones should you take? Here are a few tips. (Keep in mind, most of these tips only apply if you’re returning to the same apartment next semester!)

What To Leave At College

1. Appliances

If you’ve accumulated a variety of kitchen appliances, such as a blender, a toaster oven, a coffee maker, or a crockpot, you should leave these items in your college apartment. If you’re moving back to your parents’ house for the summer, they probably have everything you need and more. If you think you’ll need one or two small items over the summer, choose wisely and make sure you have room in your car.

2. Seasonal Clothing

You’re not going to need your fall/winter clothing, so leave them in your college apartment. Heavy coats, thick sweaters, ski/snowboard gear, and winter boots can all be left in your closet. You won’t need them until you return to school, anyways.

3. Furniture
Things like coffee tables, couches, decorative chairs, and kitchen tables should be left in your college apartment. There’s no need to bring them home when you’ll just be returning for the following semester. If you’re moving into a new apartment next semester but you don’t want to lug your furniture all the way home, consider renting a storage unit in your college town over the summer and storing your belongings there until the fall.

What To Bring Home

1. Textbooks & School Supplies

If you’re taking any summer classes, you’ll need your textbooks and school supplies on hand, so don’t leave them in your college apartment! Make sure you have enough pens, notebooks, calculators, and other items that might be necessary.

2. Bedding Accessories

If you have a favorite pillow that helps you sleep, or a cozy cushion you use to support your back while you complete schoolwork, consider bringing these home. They’re small items that won’t take up a lot of space in your car, and they’ll keep you comfortable over the summer months.

3. Electronics

If you have a TV in your college apartment but not in your bedroom at home, you might want to bring it with you when you head home for the summer. This applies to any other game systems or electronics you want to keep on hand over the summer.
