Are you moving with kids? While the great unknown of moving into a new home can be exciting for children, it can also cause anxiety. Here are a few tips for helping kids feel more comfortable during the transition.

1. Tell your children about the move ASAP.
Tell your kids early on, and tell them the right way. Make sure you’re all together as a family when you break the big news.

2. Clarify what the move means.
If you simply tell your kids that you’re moving, they might not fully understand what that means. Make sure you talk about their new school, what the new home will include (such as new amenities), how the weather might be different, and unique features of your new city or town.

3. Visit your new town as a family.
Take the kids to visit their new town before the move is permanent. Let them explore their new neighborhood and see their new school. This will instill a sense of confidence into them and get rid of any lingering anxiety about the transition.

4. Don’t pack up your kids’ favorite items.
Your kids need something to hold onto during the move, so leave some of their favorite things out. Favorite blankets, toys, dishes and utensils, and art supplies are some great ideas. Until you start creating your new life, it’s best to leave your old life as familiar as possible for your kids.

5. Let your kids decorate their rooms.
Let them pick out paint colors, bedspreads, and wall decor. This will help them have fun with the move and release some of the stress they might be feeling.
