Picture this: your child has left the nest and you are ready to turn their bedroom into a space you can utilize. You pack up their belongings neatly into boxes, but you’re stumped when it comes to the large drum set collecting dust. You want the large instrument out of your house, but you don’t want to cause any damage.

Storing a drum set is a tricky process. You want to make sure the items are properly and safely packed, as to avoid possible damage. If you’re not sure where to begin when storing a drum set, these tips are for you!

Gather your supplies

Before you disassemble your drum set, you’ll want to make sure you have all the necessary supplies for storing your items. Drum bags and padded cases work best, but you can work with other items. Cardboard boxes and plastic bins will work great for the drums and larger items. Grab some small plastic bags for loose pieces and hardware. Your cymbals are stored best in padded bags, so make sure you have those at the ready. Bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and heavy-duty tape should be at your disposal as well.

Disassemble the drum set

Your next step is taking the drum set apart. We recommend keeping a small plastic bag handy for storing any small parts or hardware. Be sure to remove the drum heads and wrap the legs in bubble wrap. Place the larger pieces in cardboard boxes or drum bags to keep them safe from dust and damage.Cymbals are best stored in padded bags, but can be individually wrapped in paper or bubble wrap and stacked. Make sure all items are packed tightly in their containers or boxes so they don’t move around and cause damage.

Move into storage

After your boxes are neatly packed, they can be moved into storage. If the drum kit is not going to be accessed frequently, we recommend placing your boxes at the back corner of your unit. This is the safest location and will keep your drums out of harm’s way. Your hard drum cases can be stacked, but you should avoid stacking drums in cardboard boxes.
