How to declutter your storage unit
Decluttering your storage unit is an important task. It’s so easy to box things up and leave them in the darkness of a storage unit, collecting dust for years and years. If you continue to move items into storage, you may soon find you need a second unit.
Decluttering can create more room for items you need to move in from your home, or potentially help you save money if you clear out enough to move to a smaller unit. No matter what your reason, here is some advice for decluttering your storage unit.
Bring Supplies
It’s important to bring various supplies with you when organizing your storage unit. Bring scissors to cut through tape and a box cutter to break down boxes you are disposing. Heavy duty trashbags are needed for items you want to trash of donate. You may want to wear gloves or a mask if your storage unit has been left untouched for a period of time and has accumulated dust.
Pace Yourself
When organizing your home, it’s recommended that you tackle one room at a time. You should follow a similar process when decluttering your storage unit. The task may feel overwhelming, but working through one box at a time will help you compartmentalize and stay on task. Try working for an hour at a time, with 40 minutes focused on sorting through items and 20 on cleaning up.
Have a plan
As you sort through the items in your unit, you’ll have to decide what you are going to keep, sell, or donate/trash. As you sort through your boxes, move items into piles for keep, trash, donate or sell, and second-chance. For the keep items, decide if those things stay in storage or move into your home. The second-chance pile is made up of items you’re not sure you want to keep or not. Don’t feel as though you need to rush the decision - It’s perfectly fine to box up those items and look at them again in another month.
