Storage units are easy to forget about. Out of sight, out of mind! However, over long periods of time, storage units can accumulate a layer of dust and debris. In addition, after months of putting more and more of your belongings into storage, you might find yourself not knowing how to find anything. With a little bit of time and effort, you can clean and organize your storage unit so that it’s both manageable and functional.

1. Examine your space.
Before you start cleaning and tidying, visit your storage unit to figure out what you need to tackle. Take photos from various angles to capture every aspect of the space. This will help you come up with an organization plan later.

2. Spread out your cleaning session.
Don’t try to complete the entire project in one day. Break your storage unit into small parts and conquer them one at a time. This will keep morale high, ensure that you’re on track, and increase your chances of success.

3. Sell or donate items you don’t need.
If you need to free up some space in your storage unit, go through your belongings and designate a donation pile and a sell pile. Electronics can easily be sold. Even jewelry, books, and appliances can often be sold. If you uncover clothing, toys, or other belongings that you’d rather donate, do that instead!

4. Maximize your space.
Before you start cleaning, organize your things. Use wall shelves, tool hangers, clothing racks, and storage containers to make the most of your space.

5. Clean, clean, clean!
Dust, sweep, and scrub your heart out. Some supplies you’ll need are gloves, a face mask, broom, dustpan, garbage bags, duster, cleaning rag, bucket, hot water, and cleaning solutions. Once your space is sparkling, you’ll feel better about keeping your things there.
